Morgane Echardour & Travis Shaw Compete at Pan American Games Tomorrow

Toronto Inline Skating Club’s Morgane Echardour and Travis Shaw will skate the sprint races at the Pan American Games in Guadelajara, Mexico.

The competition, which gets under way tomorrow, will see sprinters take to the line for a 300-meter time trial and a 1000-meter pack race.

The Pan American Games are the 2nd largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympics. The Canadian Olympic Team
consists of almost 800 Canadians who will be in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. The athletes will be trying to achieve personal bests, win Pan Am medals, set records and for some earn an Olympic Qualification spot. (To be exact, 796 in total = 97 coaches+137 support team+ 67 mission team+ 493 athletes).

This multi-sport event is held every four years with 46 sports involving 42 countries from the nations of North, Central and South America. It is the only Olympic event in which roller sports participates.

The Toronto Inline Skating Club recently celebrated it’s skaters & their accomplishments and some volunteers and their contributions.

Eric Gee and Peter Doucet produced a very well received video recapping the 2011 season.

Travis Shaw, Morgane Echardour, Wayne Burrett Off To The Pan American Games!

Congratulations to TISC”s Morgane Echardour and Travis Shaw who will be competing in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Morgane Echardour assured her spot on Canada’s Pan American Games roster by qualifying at the Canadian Outdoor Championships in Harriston in July. Travis Shaw, who also competed in the qualifying competition, was recently offered a spot on the team since last week Canada was given the option to allow a male skater to compete.

Wayne Burrett will also be in Mexico supporting Canada’s team. Mike Murray (TISC Life-time Honourary Member) is the team coach.

Being part of the Pan American Games is an important honour. The Pan American Games, which are the second largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympics, feature sports such as archery, badminton, basketball, track & field, and more! Roller sports and roller speed skating is part of a great family and community of sports.

Alain Quintard Skates & Raises Funds for MS Society

Last Sunday a week ago, I’ve skated the 50 Kms of the `Toronto Bike Tour` as my share to raise money for the MS Society.

Everything went well!

The weather was great for this event: just a little bit cool to start in the morning but under a blue sky with just enough clouds to mask the sun and keep me cool all the time. A very slight breeze also helped me especially in the second half of the event.

The route was identical to the previous years, along the Humber River for most of the time and in residential areas of western Toronto. I now know the trail very well, all its up- and down-hills, the curves, the rougher sections (too many for me) and even the cracks in the asphalt (the skater’s nightmares!).

I’ve decided to enjoy the ride and the scenic route. But, I was a little excited and I started at a good pace, passing many bikers somehow surprised to see this rider on eight wheels instead of two!

I reached the half-way point in 1:03 hour and turned away not before recharging the battery with some Gatorade! I knew the second half was to be somehow tougher with more up-hills including a long one about 250 meters long but quite steep. Overall, I felt better than the previous years. I’m sure that the regular training with my skating club (Toronto Inline Skating Club) and a slightly better skating technique contributed for a lot.

I completed the event in 2:19 or 10 minutes faster and in a better shape compared to last year.

While pushing on my skates, I thought about all those who are affected by MS. With your support and generosity (and the Molson Coors Canada matching gift program contributing dollar for dollar its employees’ donations), I‘ve given to the MS Society $5050. For some, this could look a large amount but in fact it’s not too much when you think about all costs to find a cure to this disease. In the past few years, it looks like real progress has been made towards finding some solution to this disease and a cure is almost at arm’s reach. But it’s not yet time to give up!

I’m determined to skate for MS as long as I can. So I’ll meet again with you next year!

Huge Turnout, Tons of Fun at Rainy 24-Hours Roller Montreal

Almost 1000 skaters and many more skating enthusiasts and supporters came to celebrate skating and support Quebec’s MS Society at the 24-Hours Roller Montreal.

Teams ranging from Solo to some made up the maximum 10-skaters enjoyed skating during the day, at night, and during the day once again around Montreal’s beautiful Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Parc Jean Drapeau.

TISC’s skaters were members of a few teams, including Toronto Inline Skating Club (15th place), Il Peloton (1st place), Schankel Kallisto (2nd place), and Skater’s Quest (7th place).

A special thanks to Eric Gee who did an incredible job coordinating and leading TISC’s entry, thank you to all who supported TISC’s skaters, and thank you to the skaters for coming out to enjoy this amazing experience.
